Description
The AHA’s CPR & First Aid in Youth Sports Training Kit reflects the latest science in the 2020 American Heart Association Guidelines Update for CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care, as well as the 2024 American Heart Association and American Red Cross Guidelines for First Aid. This kit teaches the lifesaving skill of CPR, how to use an AED, and basic first aid, including common injuries and incidents that may occur in youth sports settings. The kit is designed to allow anyone, from a layperson to experienced AHA CPR Instructor, to instruct the course and is intended to be reused again and again.
CPR & First Aid in Youth Sports is intended to be taught in one session for up to 20 learners at one time. The content includes 16 optional first aid topics, which can be used as desired by the facilitator or sports organization. Also, the kit content is available in English and Spanish.
Learning Objectives
After successfully completing the CPR AED portion of this kit, learners should be able to:
• Recognize when someone needs CPR
• Demonstrate performing high-quality Hands-Only CPR for an adult
• Demonstrate using an AED on an adult and on a child
• Recognize and respond to a choking adult or child
• (Optional) Demonstrate performing CPR with breaths for an adult and child
If teaching optional first aid topics, learners should be able to describe the key steps in first aid including use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and recognize and respond in emergency situations, including:
• Drowning
• Bleeding control
• Fainting
• Seizures
• Allergic reactions
• Asthma
• Concussion
• Diabetic emergency
• Heat-related illness
• Alcohol or opioid emergency
• Spinal injuries
• Smoking and vaping
• Overuse injuries
• Sprains, strains, and fractures
